ENSLAVED AFRICANS AND
WORK SONGS
The earliest foundations of soul music can be traced to the haunting cries and rhythmic chants of enslaved Africans aboard slave ships and in plantations. These songs expressed their sorrow, hope, and connection to their Creator, often serving as a survival tool amid profound hardship. Work songs emerged as a form of communication, blending rhythm and resilience to carry messages, coordinate tasks, and even signal rebellion.
